Freiburg Castle is located around an hour’s walk from St. Ruprecht. It dates from the 12th century and was built by the ‘Freynbergern’ family. The first documented evidence of the castle dates from 1472. In 1636, it fell under the ownership of Count ‘Ott Gottfried von Kollonitsch’, a member of the Croatian noble dynasty. He was responsible for having the castle expanded into a Renaissance castle. The chapel, ballroom (Rococo) and main staircase (1747) date from a later era. The castle is now privately owned and was renovated in 2009.
The castle ballrooms can be hired out for events, celebrations and parties for up to 140 people. A consecrated chapel is available for weddings and christenings, offering space for some 40 people. The magnificent castle courtyard has a capacity of around 400. The castle’s own restaurant ‘Landhaus zur Gräfin’ is an insider tip. Every Friday in Advent, an ‘Advent lounge’ is held with bar music from 19.00. A Christmas market takes place every weekend in Advent with a supporting programme of activities.
